Sophomore Composition of the Year 2014

Chloe N Gorman  (b. 1993) is an American composer from Mosinee, Wisconsin in the process of receiving a BM in Music Education and a minor in dance from Viterbo University in La Crosse Wisconsin.  Chloe has a strong background in classical music, piano, and theory that has inspired her to pursue a teaching and composition career.  “Confused” is based off a poem is written by Denise Saucedo, a sophomore at CCEHS (Community Charter Early High School, LA, CA).  This poem represents an overall state of confusion and finding clarity from another person.  This state of confusion is emulated through the layering of multiple parts on top of an ostinato theme, “walking around in circles.”  In contrast, to represent a state of clarity, all the parts come together during certain points in the piece to have the same harmonic rhythm.  The chaotic movement of people walking in a crowd inspired the rhythmic line.  The rhythmic line is to be performed with clave, but the use of tap dancing is also strongly encouraged.
